The Singer Featherweight portable sewing machine is a model made by that company between 1933 and 1964. The machine (model 221), adapted from an earlier portable, the Standard SewHandy (which company was bought out by Singer) weighs about 11 pounds and has been found to be an ideal machine for quilters and other sewers to take to classes or 'on. Serial number on lever plate is: 583369. The Standard Sewing Machine Company located in Cleveland, Ohio began manufacturing sewing machines in 1884. Standard was one of the many manufacturers that started up shortly after the dissolution of the sewing machine combination of Singer, Wheeler & Wilson, and Grover & Baker. The company that IMPORTED this machine was the Standard Sewing Equipment Co, NY. The company that SOLD the machine called it a 'Universal'. This may have been a branch of Standard Sewing Equipment, or another retailer. The MANUFACTURER of the machine is Koyo, from Osaka, Japan. I found this info from Google: STANDARD SEWING EQUIPMENT CORP.
Wilson Sewing Machine Serial Numbers
A sewing machine by any maker with a serial number of 500 or less would be considered early, desirable and pretty rare. Low serial numbers by more obscure makers would be even better. At the left is an example of a sewing machine called the Ne Plus with serial # 21. It dates from the mid 1850's. There are serial numbers on the Universal sewing machines. One was listed as 402187 and one of two serial numbers we have been able to track down. If the serial number on your Universal sewing machine starts with a JA that may indicate it was made in Japan. The Universal De Luxe had a serial number S89157.
