Ucinet Mac

I used this work around in a 2017 class so I dont know if it still is effective.

I teach SNA and have Mac users in the class. So I got a MacBook Pro to see how to use UCINET in that environment. Below is what I have come up with so far. It uses an Oracle utility called VirtualBox.
First, use VirtualBox to install the environment to host a 'virtual machine'. The link to that install package is herehttps://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads and of course you download and install the OS X host package.
Second, once it is installed you create a new virtual machine in the 'Oracle VM VirtualBox Manager' screen specifying which Windows operating system you are going to run in that virtual machine. You then install a Windows operating system that you can get on a DVD (such as Windows 8.1) . (I also had a Windows 7 disc and I installed that OS on a second virtual machine). I got these from my U's computer store cheap and then followed their instructions to install the operating system. Once Windows is installed (and it takes a while, hour or so, with some input from you), you can then download and install the latest version of UCINET from herehttps://sites.google.com/site/ucinetsoftware/downloads using the virtual machine. (It installed for me in both Windows environments – the difference between the two environments is that 7 uses fewer computer resources to install while 8.1's look is that of a Surface Tablet rather than the older desktop config.)
Third, because I like students to keep all working files on a thumb drive or memory stick, they need to update their Virtual Machine with Oracle VirtualBox Extension Pack which is available for download at virtualbox.org site.
Once you have installed it you go to settings on your virtual machine. With the thumb drive plugged into a usb port, you go to settings/ports/usb and then check enable usb controller and enable usb 2.0 (echi) controller and the click on the first button on the right just above the button with the + sign. then click okay. remove the usb stick then launch your virtual machine. when the windows is loaded then plug the stick back in and you should see windows telling you that it is installing the software for the disc and once done the disc should be available in your file list. Then you can change the default folder in UCINET to the thumb drive.

I am asking students to install UCINET for my course. However, students using MAC seem encounter problem during installation although they read instruction on UCINET sites. I am not MAC user and I do not know hoe to help them.
